•  Although changing carriers may seem like a straightforward process, there are really some things you should know when you do change carriers. With so many US wireless carriers, changing providers shouldn’t be too difficult.

•  It is important not to cancel your current service until you have secured another US wireless carrier. This way you will not lose your current phone number.

•  When you do contact one of the new wireless carriers that you want to change to, you should have the following information on hand: your phone number, billing address, account number, as well as your last bill from your old carrier. When changing providers, only the person the account is under is authorized to make any changes.

•  Once you have made the arrangements to change to one of the other US wireless carriers, it will take about four days to complete the transfer. Although there usually isn’t much of a problem with this, you will want to have some form of backup communication just incase there is a problem.

•  Be aware that new wireless carriers do have the right to charge you a transfer fee, but in most cases you should be able to get the provider to agree to pay the transfer fee as part of your new service.

•  If you signed a contract with your carrier, you will want to ensure that there are no early termination fees associated with changing to one of the other wireless carriers. If you break your contract you could be charged up to $200.

•  You should also be aware of the fact that you may have to change phones. Although you can keep your same number, the phone you are now using may be locked to that specific carrier. Get all the information you need on this subject before changing wireless carriers.

There are a number of providers but the top wireless carriers include T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and AT&T, among others. These providers are by no means the only providers you will have to choose from but they do tend to offer the widest coverage and a good variety of features.

If you are looking for something a little more economical, or you don’t want to get locked into a contract, there is always the option of choosing from among the prepaid wireless carriers. These would include companies such as Cricket, Tracfone, and Net10, though the top wireless carriers also have prepaid plans you might want to consider.
