These days, more and more kids have their own cell phones, which they use for many purposes, from communication to entertainment. With today’s range of high tech smart phones comes a range of mobile applications, which are also used for a wide range of purposes by cell phone users of all ages, including kids who have these devices. However, according to a recent report the Federal Trade Commission has expressed concern over the apps that are being used by kids with cell phones and how these apps are collecting and using data. Officials are said to have complained that software companies that produce these apps are failing to inform parents with regards to the personal information that is being collected from kids using the apps and how this data is being used.
Officials have said that whilst these unsuspecting kids use their apps a range of personal data could be collected, including their phone number, location and even friends lists. The FTC said that the makers of the apps as well as the stores selling them should be responsible for ensuring that information is provided with regards to what data is being recorded, what it is used for and how long it is stored.
A report from the FTC stated: “As gatekeepers of the app marketplace, the app stores should do more. This recommendation applies not just to Apple and Google, but also to other companies that provide a marketplace for kids’ mobile apps.”
