Smart phones have become hugely popular over recent years, with many people using one of the wide range of devices on the market, including Apple iPhones, Android based smart phones and BlackBerry models. However, despite the popularity of these gadgets, many people are unaware of the difference between their Operating Systems and their smart phone manufacturers.
A recent survey revealed that 83 percent of consumers polled did not really know what Android was even though they were using an Android smart phone or tablet. Some of those polled thought that Android was the manufacturer of the smart phone whilst others thought that it was the model of their phone. However, when it came to iPhones, 98 percent realised that Apple was the manufacturer of the device.
With BlackBerry, however, 64 percent thought that this was the name of the manufacturer rather than the name of the model/device – the manufacturer of BlackBerry devices is Research in Motion (RIM).
The survey showed that the best known smart phone on the market was the Apple iPhone, with the second best known being BlackBerry devices. 98 percent of those polled said that they had heard of an iPhone but only 80 percent were able to give a good description and idea of what a smart phone was.
One official said: "The research shows two main things – one that individual products are better recognised than product types and two that the Apple goods such as the iPhone and iPad have much higher levels of awareness amongst consumers than their competitors."
