Increase in people suffering from ‘nomophobia’

There are all sorts of common phobias that affect consumers across the world but according to recent reports one that is becoming increasingly common is ‘nomophobia’ or fear of losing cell phones!

It is pretty clear that more and more of us have become increasingly reliant on our cell phones and smart phones over recent years, with many of us using them on a regular basis throughout the course of the day to do everything from call and text to get online, network on social networking sites, listen to music, enjoy entertainment and much more.

However, according to recent reports, things may be going a bit far with our obsession with cell phones, as this has now resulted in a rising phobia known as nomophobia – otherwise known as ‘no mobile phobia’! This is according to the results of a recent survey of one thousand people, which was carried out for SecurEnvoy which reflected just how reliant we have become when it comes to these devices.

The results showed that a massive sixty six percent of people lived in fear of losing or finding themselves without their cell phones. Four years ago the number of people who were worried about losing their phones stood at fifty three percent, so there has been a sharp rise over recent years partly due to the increased reliance we have on these devices and the increasing number of things that we now use our cell phones for.

Andy Kemshall, CTO and co-founder of SecurEnvoy, said: “The first study into nomophobia, conducted four years ago, revealed that 53% of people suffered from the condition and our study reveals this has now risen to 66% in the UK and shows no sign of abating. There is another study into mobile phone use that found people check their phones, on average, 34 times a day so it wouldn’t take long for you to realise if you’d misplaced your device.”
