When looking for a good game there are a number of things that players look for to ensure they get as much entertainment for their money as possible. Now even though Robotek is free the amount of effort that has gone into making the game is clearly shown by the original style of the game as well as in the graphics and the sound, which are both beautiful and compelling.
The story behind the game is fairly straightforward and involves a huge robot uprising in which the robots take over the world and the aim of the game is obviously to defeat these robots and reclaim the earth on behalf of humanity... using a robot!
To complete this task the player must move around a world map containing various nodes and defeat the big robots in each of these nodes. To do this the player gets a big robot that has the ability to defend itself, cause massive damage and call in three other drone robots to help it defeat the evil robot, which has exactly the same abilities. Whilst each area consist of the same looking robot fighting another same looking robot and most would think that this would get boring the tactical game mechanics go a long way in keeping this interesting. Each battle is a turn-based affair and involves the player and the enemy choosing from one of three battle options and then spinning the equivalent of a fruit machine set of three icons to establish the results of the turn. This allows for each battle to become a unique fight with a wide variety of different outcomes and although the completely random results that sometimes occur can infuriatingly turn the tide in the enemies favour the tactical element usually means that the choices throughout each fight decide the winner rather than pure luck.
Whilst incredibly simple and easy to pick up, Robotek quickly becomes a game that requires a lot of thinking to win the battles and although quite repetitive at times the occasional wins against all odds makes up for this most of the time.
