The first such feature is the Notification Centre. These appear as a pop-up (or down) menu at the top of the screen, which emerges when you slide down from the top. This notification section works much like the Google Android version. It essentially updates you with everything going on with your iPhone – including messages, missed calls, calendar updates and e-mails.
Secondly, you are now also able to create folders on your home screen, a long due way of organising your phone’s applications. The new inbuilt application, Newsstand, works in a similar way. In essence it is a folder already created for you which contains all your magazine and newspaper applications. It also features its own unique layout, which looks similar to the one currently seen on the iBook application. The iCloud and iMessage are two of the most talked about features with iOS 5. The advantages of iCloud are numerous. It allows for you access a virtual space in which you can store pictures and other media files, which can then all be downloaded from any other Apple device. In addition, iCloud also removes the need to upgrade via your PC or Mac. All the updates and backups are done autonomously by the phone, removing the sometimes troublesome need of connecting to the licensed computer to perform a system update.
iMessage works in a similar way to Blackberry’s IM. When connected to the internet you will be able to send messages to other apple devices, including iPads. The messages are free to send and will not affect your monthly allotment of texts. The system is fast and smooth, with messages being sent equal to or even faster than they are through texting. To add a contact you will need the e-mail that the correspondent uses to sign into iTunes. It won’t feed off your previous contacts (as these are only numbers), but still, for close family and friends who own an iPhone, it is easy to set up a new contact.
The call quality is improved over the iPhone 4S. Of course, it doesn’t suffer from any of the issues that were prevalent on its predecessor’s release. Overall the call quality is as you’d expect from a market leading phone such as this. Its performance is also of the highest standard, featuring Apple’s A5 dual-core 1GHz processor and a dual-core GPU. The iPhone 4S has unprecedented phone graphics capability, allowing you to smoothly run all the more demanding games from the App Store.
